Review: Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask

***THIS REVIEW IS SPONSORED. Through BrandBacker we discovered Valentia Skin Care and were chosen to review this product. However,  everything written is our own opinions, and if you are to use this product remember YMMV.

About two months ago we were chosen to review Valentia’s Royal Rose Hydrating Serum (read that review here) and fell in love with the product and the brand. Valentia is known for being a skincare brand that is cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, and uses mostly natural ingredients. All these traits appeal to us very strongly, as most makeup and skincare brands can’t claim any, let alone all, of these things. So, once we heard Valentia was looking for bloggers to review their Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask, we jumped on board as soon as possible. The Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask claims to:

In the short term:

  • Draws out dirt, oil & other skin impurities
  • Improve skin tone & texture
  • Leave skin feeling instantly smoother & refreshed

In the long term:

  • Reduce size of enlarged pores
  • Help to strengthen skin and make it firmer
  • Help to clear skin, so you have less breakouts

The short term claims definitely sound plausible, but the long term claims seem a little iffy. A wash off mask can only do so much as it has mainly temporary effects on the skin. So, as a result these claims seem a little far fetched. But, if the mask fulfills all the short term claims, we would be more than pleased.

Here are the magical ingredients:

***Taken from Valentia

  • Kaolin Clay- Clay minerals draw impurities, improve skin tone, and tighten pores for smoother firmer skin.
  • Plant Stem Cells-Naturally decreases the level of pro-aging toxins and works to soother the skin, reduce redness, and improve evenness.
  • Spirulina- A botanical stimulant full of vitamins that hydrates the skins surface and contributes to tissue regeneration of the skin.
  • CoQ10- Lessens the appearance of wrinkles by reducing free radical damage and stimulating health collagen production.
  • Hibiscus & Cranberry Fibers- Both lend their anti-aging properties to firm and reinforce the skin, helping to reduce the creation of new wrinkles.

Here are the cursed ingredients:

  • Butylene Glycol- has an acne trigger rating of 1.
  • Carbomer- has an irritant trigger rating of 1.
  • Tocopherol- has and acne and irritant trigger rating of 2.

What Valentia says to do:

***Taken from Valentia

  • Generously apply on face carefully avoiding the eye area.
  • Leave on your skin for 15-20 minutes or until mask dries.
  • Wipe it off with a damp cloth soaked in warm water.
  • As the mask has natural fibers use circular motions to remove the mask helping to slough off dead skin and exfoliate.

What we do:

  • After double cleansing, or between your oil cleanser and water based cleanser (which ever you prefer), apply sufficient layer of clay mask on your trouble areas.
  • Leave on until mask dries (usually about 20 minutes depending on how heavy you applied it).
  • Using warm water, remove mask using circular motions.
  • One mask is completely washed off, gently pat face dry and continue with the rest of your face routine.

How it worked for us:

This product technically did a good job at helping to draw out impurities from the skin as it did bring some of our under the skin pimples to the surface. Also, it  worked great as an exfoliator while washing it off. However, this mask made our skin feel like it was burning while it was on. Out skin became extremely irritated due to the incredibly overwhelming cranberry scent that the product has. We are unsure of why this product has such a strong fragrance since it’s a clay mask, but it needs to go. If Valentia took about the cranberry fragrance, this clay mask wouldn’t be so bad. But due to the fact that it irritated our skin so much, we can’t really recommend it.

  • Made of 98% natural ingredients and cruelty-free
  • Goes on more like a thick cream, than a clay mask
  • Does not leave face stiff when dry
  • Washes off easily with warm water
  • Large amount of product given
  • Helped to bring pimples to the surface
  • Great exfoliator

  • Extremely overwhelming cranberry scent added for no reason
  • Made our skin feel like it was burning while it was on
  • Long term effects are still uncertain
  • Can be a considered expensive depending on your budget

Final Rating:

Rating Scale

  • 1-Bad, had a reaction, would not buy again
  • 2-Did not work
  • 3-Worked, but nothing special
  • 4-Great product, but has the potential to be replaced
  • 5-Holy Grail, it’s the cat’s meow!

This product turned out to be a huge disappointment since we have enjoyed Valentia products in the past. But since this product irritated our skin due to the added cranberry flagrance, we don’t intend to use it again.
