Recently we were contacted by Petaluma and Co., a Korean beauty e-shop based in the U.S. that just launched this spring. They believe that a proper, daily skincare routine is what leads to a lifetime of health and beauty. So, in order to promote this belief, they hand pick, test, and sell sheet masks from Korea. They asked us if we wanted try some of the masks they carry, and we of course said yes! Sheet masks are one of our favorite parts of our Asian beauty routines, as they are always a great quick fix for when your skin needs an extra boost. Petaluma and Co. sent us 6 sheet masks to try, so we’ll be trying 2 every week for the next 3 weeks to share and review for you! This week we tried the Nature Republic Multi Vitamin and Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Collagen Solution Hydrogel masks.

We took a picture of us wearing the masks so you could see what the fit and material looked like. Below are our individual reviews of them!

Which Beauty Witch tried this mask?

Sara (skin type: oily, acne-prone)

Claims:

The theme of this mask series seems to be the ocean, so some of the ingredients and claims reflect that. On the back of the mask packaging Nature Republic gives a small overview of what the mask is supposed to do, so here they are listed:

  • Strengthen skin’s elasticity (contains collagen)
  • Moisturizes the skin (contains marine energy, which I’m not sure what Nature Republic means by this)
  • Brightens skin tone (contains niacinamide)
  • Keeps skin healthy (contains pure Hawaiian ocean water enriched with multi-vitamins)

Instructions:

What Nature Republic says to do:

  • After applying toner, pull out mask sheet from package and unfold.
  • Apply the mask sheet onto the face from the lower part of the mask and move upward towards the forehead. (**Hyrdogel masks usually come in two parts, a top eye piece and a bottom mouth piece)
  • Remove sheet mask after 30 minutes.
  • Gently pat any remaining formula into skin.

What I say to do:

I completely agree with Nature Republic’c instructions, so I pretty much did the same. The only thing I have to add is, they say to leave the mask on for 30 minutes and I say to leave the mask on for as long as necessary. Hydrogel masks are thick when you first put them on, so I suggest that after 30 minutes feel the mask and see if it feels significantly thinner than when you first put it on. If it does, go ahead and take it off. But if it does not, go ahead and leave it on a little longer or until the mask has no more essence left on it. I like to leave sheet masks on until my skin has fully absorbed all the essence.

Material and Fit:

I actually think the fit of this hydrogel mask was fantastic. Hydrogel masks usually fit my face much better than regular sheet masks, but often the nose part is too long or the forehead is too big. However, this mask fit my face very snugly and there was not a lot of excess hanging off the edges of my face.

As for the material, it was very thick and sturdy. Most hydrogel masks feel jelly like, and this mask was no different. My only complaint about the material and fit of this mask, is that it slipped off my face easily. The mask started to slide down my face after a few minutes, so when wearing this I suggest leaning back or lying down.

Essence:

The essence for this mask was on bit thicker than water, and didn’t leave a sticky feeling after being applied. My skin absorbed it nicely and there was just enough essence left in the packet for me to apply some to my neck and chest area.

Final Rating:

Overall, I am extremely pleased with this mask and would not be opposed to using it again. I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if I was shopping on my own, as it doesn’t stand out in the vast array of other sheet masks that are available on the market. But I am happy that Petaluma and Co. picked it out for us to try, as I highly enjoyed using this product. After taking it off, my skin felt plump and extremely hydrated, so hydrated that I only really needed a light moisturizer afterward. Also, it didn’t break me out, and if anything it helped to soothe my current breakout. I recommend this hydrogel mask for all skin types, especially dry or dehydrated ones, and think it is definitely giving a shot.

Rating Scale

  • 1-Bad, had a reaction, would not buy again
  • 2-Did not work
  • 3-Worked, but nothing special
  • 4-Great product, but has the potential to be replaced
  • 5-Holy Grail, it’s the cat’s meow!

Using this hydrogel mask was an extremely satisfying experience, as it helped to give my skin a much needed hydration boost. I would love to keep more of these on hand for when my skin needs that extra something!

Which Beauty Witch tried this mask?

Rosa (skin type: combination, acne-prone)

Claims:

  • Anti-aging
  • Brightens complexion
  • Hydrates skin

Instructions:

(From the back of the packaging)

  1. Wash your face
  2. Leave on for 20-25 minutes
  3. Remove mask, pat for better absorption
  4. Apply toner and emulsion after for best results.

How I used it:

  1. Double cleansed and toned skin
  2. Left on for 20 minutes
  3. Removed mask, patted skin and applied left over essence from packet.
  4. applied essence, serum, and moisturizer

Material and Fit:

The material was a slick hydro-gel, though not seeping wet. I found this mask to be one of the best form-fitting masks. I find that hydro-gels can be a bit tricky to fit to my face but this one went on no problem.

Essence:

There wasn’t a lot of extra essence left in the packet but my skin LOVED it. By the time that 20 minutes had gone by, my face had absorbed all of the essence and it didn’t leave my face feeling sticky or greasy. The next day my skin still looked bright and plump and the few irritated spots on my face had gone down marginally.

Final Rating:

I went a little back and forth with my rating for this mask. Would I buy it again? Maybe. Was it a great product? YES. You may be asking yourself; “If it was a great product, Rosa, why wouldn’t you repurchase?” The answer? I’m not sure. It did great things for my face, the ingredients are simple and didn’t irritate or leave my skin feeling sticky or slimy, but overall I wasn’t wow’ed. I would use it again but I find that I wouldn’t be torn to throw it aside for a new sheet mask.

  • 2-Did not work
  • 3-Worked, but nothing special
  • 4-Great product, but has the potential to be replaced
