We’re back again with our review of Petaluma and Co. and if you didn’t get to read Part 1 of our review you, can read it here. Before we get into talking about this weeks sheet mask, let’s start with a quick review of what Petaluma and Co. is. They are a Korean beauty e-shop based in the U.S. that just launched this spring. They believe that a proper, daily skincare routine is what leads to a lifetime of health and beauty. So, in order to promote this belief, they hand pick, test, and sell sheet masks from Korea.

They asked us a few weeks ago if we wanted try some of the masks they carry, and we of course said yes! We love sheet masks as they are a great way to give your skin a nice extra boost when your skin is feeling dull, dehydrated, or inflamed. Petaluma and Co. sent us 6 sheet masks to try, so we tried 2 last week, 2 this week, and will be trying 2 next week! This week we tried the Leaders Coconut Gel Masks in Broccoli and Tomato.

We took a picture of us wearing the masks so you could see what the fit and material looked like. On the left is the Coconut Gel Mask with Tomato and and on the right is the Coconut Gel Mask with Broccoli. Below are our individual reviews of them!

Leaders Coconut Gel Mask with Broccoli:

Which Beauty Witch tried this mask?

Sara (skin type: oily, acne-prone)

Claims:

The theme of this mask series is obviously vegetables, so some of the ingredients and claims will reflect that in some way. On the back of the mask packaging Leaders gives a small overview of what the mask is supposed to do, so here they are listed:

  • Made with broccoli extract, which contains Vitamin C and Beta-carotene (protects skin from harmful environmental effects and calms irritated skin)
  • Made from all natural fermented coconut juice, which contains Vitamins B and C (restores youthful resilience, hydrates, and strengthen’s skin)

Instructions:

What Leaders says to do:

  • Clean and dry face.
  • Remove mask from package and peel off one side of the protective paper.
  • Place directly on skin, contouring it to fit the curves around eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Remove the protective film from the outside of the mask.
  • Leave on for 10-20 minutes.
  • Remove mask and gently par the face with fingertips until the remaining serum is fully absorbed.

What I say to do:

I agree with Leaders instructions and essentially did the same thing. The only thing about this mask that is different from other hydrogel masks, is that it is one piece and not two. So, make sure you consider that before applying, because getting the position of the mask right is a bit more difficult.

Material and Fit:

I wasn’t a huge fan of the fit of this hydrogel mask. I tend to prefer two piece hydrogel masks because I’m a little spoiled, but the fit of this one was just a bit odd for me. It felt tight in the nose and mouth area, but big on the outer edges. I have tried hydrogel and sheet masks with worse fits, so this one wasn’t horrible, it just wasn’t my favorite.

As for the material, I also found it a bit odd. Most other hydrogel masks are thick and gel-like, but this one was thin and not gel-like at all. It was soaked in essence, however it was not as dense as other hydrogels, which was a bit of a turn off for me as I have come to expect that from hydrogels. Also when on, this mask looks a bit like a plastic bag, so that was kind of funny.

Essence:

This mask came with a ton of essence, but most of it stayed in the packaging and not on the mask. I did like the essence as it was watery, non-sticky, and made my skin feel very soft and smooth afterward. However, I do wish more stayed on the mask itself.

Final Rating:

I probably wouldn’t purchase the Leaders Coconut Gel Mask with Broccoli in the future as I was not pleased with the fit, material, and amount of essence that stayed on the mask. However, I was very pleased with the essence itself and if someone gave me this mask in the future, I wouldn’t be opposed to using it for this reason. I don’t feel this masks lives up to the name of a hydrogel mask and instead would consider it to be closer to a regular sheet mask. So, I guess if you look at it that way, it’s not too bad. I would recommend this mask for all skin types as it did not break me out and I did not have any adverse reactions to it. It wasn’t too much for my oily skin, but I don’t know if it was hydrating enough for drier skin types.

Rating Scale

  • 1-Bad, had a reaction, would not buy again
  • 2-Did not work
  • 3-Worked, but nothing special
  • 4-Great product, but has the potential to be replaced
  • 5-Holy Grail, it’s the cat’s meow!

Noona 3

This masks was not my favorite in terms of fit and material, but I did really like how the essence made my skin feel soft and smooth. It’s not one of the best hydrogel masks out there, however I do think the essence is worth taking note of.

Which Beauty Witch tried this mask?

Rosa (skin type: combination, acne-prone)

Claims:

  • “Restores youthful resilience”
  • Hydrates skin
  • Strengthens skin barrier

Instructions:

(From the back of the packaging)

  1. Clean and Dry Face
  2. Remove mask from package and peel off one side of the protective paper.
  3. Place mask directly on skin, contouring it to fit the curves around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
  4. Remove protective film from the outside the mask.
  5. Leave on for 10-20 minutes
  6. Remove mask and gently pat the face with fingertips until the remaining serum is fully absorbed.

How I used it:

  1. Double cleansed and toned skin
  2. Left on for 25 minutes (until mask was dry)
  3. Removed mask, patted skin and applied left over essence from packet.
  4. applied essence, serum, and moisturizer

Material and Fit:

The material was a very thin hydrogel layer, that took a little bit of work to get out of its protective sleeves and to fit comfortably on my face. As you can probably tell in the picture above, I had a bit of trouble adjusting this mask to my face, but found that I enjoyed the shape once it was done being applied.

Essence:

There was just a little bit of essence left in the bottom of the packaging that I used to pat into the mask and onto my neck and chest after applying the mask. The essence contains coconut gel, which is filled with hydrating properties as well as tomato lycopone which is filled with antioxidants and helps even and brighten skin tone.

Final Rating:

Though i felt like I was wrestling with the mask in the beginning, my overall experience was very positive. I could really feel the hydration from the coconut oil almost immediately and found the mask to be very soothing. Though the directions said to only apply for 10-20 minutes I left it on until I felt confident that most if not all of the essence had absorbed into my skin. Upon peeling it off I found that the mask had changed color as the essence went into my skin. Automatically, I noticed a big difference in skin tone, it was brighter and a lot of my discoloration had evened out. Even into the next day my skin looked radiant and a few blemishes had even gone down and looked less irritated. I would love to get more of these masks when my skin needs a quick boost of moisture or if I needed to even out my skin.

  • 2-Did not work
  • 3-Worked, but nothing special
