***This review is not sponsored. Everything written is my own opinion, and if you are to use this product remember YMMV.
Last week, Sara introduced some of her favorite makeup up products. As she stated, they are the products that she uses on the regular and that helps her achieve a “no-makeup” look. As you’ll see in my products below, Sara and I have very similar products but our makeup style is very different. While Sara works for a natural look, my style leans towards natural skin with winged liner and bold lips. I’ll take you through from base to lips of my favorite products as of 2016.
When I know that I have a long day ahead of me, I’ll add The Porefessional primer by Benefit. It’s cream with a slight tint that seems to even my skintone a bit while also helping my creams and concealers stay on longer with less creasing or smearing.
My skin has never been happy with thick foundations and powders, often breaking out soon after application. My remedy? BB and CC creams. (Can I get an amen?!) That being said, there are still plenty of American brands that still haven’t gotten the BB/CC formula down enough to let my skin breath. I am currently using Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream in Honey Beige (No.27). I received this BB cream from Jess (Skinnandtonic) thanks to an amazing instagram contest she had and I’ve fallen in love with the product since. With a light application it easily covers any uneven coloring or small blemishes while also working well to hide larger breakouts when I need the extra coverage.
When I need to cover dark circles brought on from my latest K-drama binge, I tend to use Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer + Treatment. Though I’m sure I’m using it wrong, I also use it to give me a slight highlight on my chin, jaw, and nose due to how easily it blends in with the rest of my makeup.
At the end of my makeup routine, I usually set the look by applying Innisfree’s No-Sebum Blur Powder. It goes on without a white cast and helps control the oil on my face without creasing my makeup throughout the day.
I love adding a rosey or “sun kissed” blush to the apples of my cheeks. Lightly dusting on a bit of “Coral” by Lorac usually helps me achieve that just blushed look.
I don’t use bronzers much, and honestly the first one I’ve owned is this Amazonian Clay bronzer from Tarte. It’s light with hints of glitter that make it easy to achieve a more natural contour.
I love glitter. I mean I really love glitter. Before highlighters were a big thing I used to brush glitter powder to my cheeks, now I just use Too Faced’s Candle Light Glow highlighter. It helps frost my cheeks while also giving me that nice pink tint.
When summer comes around, I’ve started to use Nyx’s Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in the color “Gleam”. It’s described as a “golden peach pearl” so it’s basically another shimmering blush but I find that the cream lasts better in the heat and I don’t have to worry about application if I’m going to be outside all day.
Lets start with eyeshadow. I could have written a whole article on eyeshadow alone, but I’ll stick with what I’ve been using and favoring this year.
The first palette to ring in 2016 is Kat Von D’s Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette. The colors are creamy and matte and highly pigmented. I use a lot of these colors for a bse or my brow high light because the color applies so strongly and easily blends in with other shadows. Due to it’s neutral tones I’m able to get an amazing smokey eye look while also being able to tone it down and keep it natural.
When I want a bit of color in my look, Tarte’s in Bloom Clay Palette adds shimmer and pinks to the mix. This mix of matte and glitter shadows works really well in the summer when I want to bring a bit of brightness to my eyes rather than my usual dark and smokey look. The color “Funny Girl” is a nice glitter that goes on easily and gently and can blend over any colors I put underneath it.
The newest addition to my shadow collection are two colors from ColourPop. These shadows are a mix between powder and cream, applying smoothly to the lid with saturated color and shimmer. The colors I have are “Sequin”, a mix between copper and peach with gold and silver flecks that tie in well with my Tarte Palette and”Bae” , described as a ‘rich eggplant purple’ with hints of green and blue shimmer that transforms the pigment every time you move your head.
When it comes to eyeliners I’ve tried them all. Pens, gels, creams, pencils, pots, you name it, I’ve done it. The only product that gets my HG seal of approval is Kat Von D’s Tattoo liner. This liquid pen liner goes on smoothly, assists in making the sharpest wing and DOESN’T COME OFF. It doesn’t smudge, it doesn’t fade or crease or do that gross thing where it ends upon the top of your eyelid. I’ve worn it to concerts and water parks, I’ve slept in it and it hasn’t budged or smeared. I told myself I would never be one of those people that pays $20 for eyeliner, especially since I use so much of it, but here I am, in love with my $20 eyeliner.
Mascara and I have a love/hate relationship. By that I mean, I love long thick looking lashes and mascara just doesn’t want to see me be happy. I’ve tried Tarte, I’ve tried Benefits, I’ve tried Dior and drugstore and so far the only one that gives me results that don’t make me want to cry with frustration is L’Oreal’s Paris Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara. It helps me create long, dark “falsie” looking lashes without the formula being too thick or difficult to take off at the end of the day.
In Second image from left to right: Colour Pop’s Poison, Jenneration X, Julep, and Brink, Iope’s Water Fit Lipstick #41, Colour Pop’s Matte Liquid Lip in Dohee, and Rimmel’s Lasting Finishing Kate Moss edition in #10.
If there’s a product I have more of than eyeshadow, it’s lip products. I’ve got your tints, jellies, peel-offs, sticks, crayons, and chaps and almost all of them are red. Though it’s painful for me to do, I’ve narrowed down to my few favorites and everyday lips.
Lets start with the classic. My all time favorite red lip comes from Rimmel. It’s Kate’s Lasting Finish #10 and it’s a dark red lip that applies easily and lasts long. It may transfer on everything my lips touch but it’s my go to when I want that dangerously sexy red lip.
Next we have all the new Colourpop lips I’ve purchased in the last month. “Brink” is a nice taupe that is only a hair darker than my natural lips. I wear this to work and when I want a more neutral or toned down face. Dohee, a matte liquid lip is a bright and happy peach that’s perfect for the summer time while Julep is a cross between coral and red and Jenneration X is a red lip that’s almost orange. Poison starts going back to a true red, the brown tint making me learn towards it on nights out when I want my lips to be as dark as my eyes.
Lastly, we have my Iope’s water fit lipstick #41. It goes on like a colored lip balm, smooth and with just a hint of color. This is another favorite for work, when I want to add just a bit of color to my lips without putting on a true lipstick. A quick swipe blushes the lips while layering will bring out more of it’s true color and gloss.
I use most of these products on a daily basis, some of them having been in my routine for years now. Most of these items are things I would repurchase or plan on getting more of in different varieties (such as Colourpop). Others in this list are ones that I’ve never tried before, makeup is a fun hobby of mine and I’m constantly adding to my collection! All of the products on this list are products I highly recommend and if you have any questions or recommendations of what I should try next I would be more than happy to discuss it!
