I live in a place where fortunately the air quality  is good, but I commute to Philly for college. Philly’s air quality isn’t horrible, but it’s definitely more polluted then I am used to. I was recently thinking about how the pollution would negatively effect my skin in the long run. Air pollution is said to cause premature aging and uneven skin-tone.  So, I thought I should incorporate a product into my routine that directly combats against environmental harm. This lead me to the purchase of the Ariul Berry Vital Daily Defense Serum, which claims to use antioxidants to strengthen your skin’s ability to fight against harmful environmental factors.

Claims

“Feel the amazing strength of the Super Berry! Ariul Berry Vital Daily Defense Serum protects your skin from the harmful environment during the day, and allows for the skin to maintain its smoothness.”

  • Protects skin from the harmful environment

Note that the Chokeberry aka Aronia Fruit Extract is a main ingredient. This is supposed to be the main antioxidant in the formula.

How to use:

Serum is has a gel-like texture that is similar to an emulsion, but a little lighter. Comes out a light pink color, but clear once absorbed. The amount of product pictured is the amount that one pump dispenses.

What Ariul instructs:

(Taken from Memebox.com, because instructions on box are in Korean and this is where I purchased the product from.)

  • Apply 1 to 2 pumps of serum all over cleansed and toned face.
  • Gently tap in with fingertips for better absorption.
  • Use in the AM and PM

What I do:

  • After cleansing and toning apply 1 to 2 pumps of serum.
  • Pat product into skin for better absorption.
  • Use both morning and night to make sure your receiving the full benefit.
  • In the AM, apply moisturizer and sunscreen after.
  • In the PM, apply moisturizer after.

How it worked for me:

I enjoy using this serum as it leaves my skin feeling smooth and plump. This is especially nice in the morning, because I find that my makeup goes on smoother which is a benefit I didn’t anticipate.  It also absorbs nicely and is lightly hydrating, so it fits into my routine easily.

However, as for its intended purpose I haven’t seen any notable long term effects after a couple months of use. I can’t tell if it’s helping with premature aging, because I am only 21 and not really seeing signs of aging yet. I can say though that when I use this serum, I find that my skin is less dry at the end of the day. This is the case even on days I’m in Philly, which normally leave my skin feeling dirty and dry. As for it helping with uneven skin-tone, I do think it helps somewhat but I don’t think it’s enough on its own. So, if uneven skin-tone is a major problem for you, I would use this in combination with another product.

Pros:

  • Cleanly and appealing packaging
  • Packaging clearly shows how much product is left
  • A decent amount of product given
  • Smooths out skin texture
  • Lightly hydrating
  • Absorbs easily
  • Layers well under makeup

Cons:

  • Has a fruity scent that some may be sensitive to
  • Limited availability
  • Expensive
  • Unsure of the “defense” effects

Final Rating:

Rating Scale

  • 1-Bad, had a reaction, would not buy again
  • 2-Did not work
  • 3-Worked, but nothing special
  • 4-Great product, but has the potential to be replaced
  • 5-Holy Grail, it’s the cat’s meow!

Noona 3.5

This serum goes on nicely and leaves my skin feeling refreshed, but the long terms effects aren’t significant.
